And Other Stories

Interesting piece by Jenny Diski in the latest LRB on 'The Future of Publishing'. This introduced me to And Other Stories, a 'Community Interest Company' (CIC - a new one to me) which publishes books on a not-for-profit basis. It works by subscription: after subscribing, you get what And Other Stories decide to publish (their editorial decision, fed by a network of reading groups). £20 gets you two books, £35 gets you four. Obviously books already ont heir list can be got from the usual distributors. Several Spanish books (Juan Villalobos, Down the Rabbit Hole a recent successful example) reflecting the Hispanic interestes of company founder Stefan Tobler. It seems a refreshingly different approach to the big brands, and a good opportunity for libraries, schools, and reading groups, as well as individual readers, to get involved with new literary fiction.
